Tokyo, May 17 (CNA) Taiwanese students won in two categories of an international cheerleading competition in Tokyo on the weekend and also bagged three second-place prizes.
A team from Chin Min Institute of Technology in Miaoli County won two first place prizes in the mixed-gender and five-member group stunt category of the 4th Cheerleading Asia International Open Championships that were held at the Yoyogi National Stadium in Tokyo Saturday and Sunday.
It also placed second in the mixed group division against Japanese teams and won the congeniality prize.
A team from Taipei Physical Education College took second prizes in the mixed group and the five-member group stunt divisions of the international category and placed third in the mixed group division against Japanese teams.
Chang Yu-chiuan, director of the Miaoli school's Department of Recreation Sports and Health Promotion, said the students from the school each paid NT$12,000 (US$381) to travel to Japan to participate in the competition.
Last month, they also paid their own travel expenses of about NT$50,000 to take part in a competition in the United States, sheadded. China sent a total of 14 teams to the U.S. competition, he noted.
Although cheerleading is not a sport in the Asian Games or the Olympics, almost all countries attach great importance to this newsport as it can show a country's teamwork and team spirit, Chang said.
